(QCOSTARICA – By Henry Morales, Vozdeguanacaste.com) In the months of January, February, March and April, thousands of tourists come to enjoy the attractions of Guanacaste, with the beaches being the preferred areas. However, as in the rest of the world, crimes against vacationers take place and leave a negative impression on them.

To get a more in-depth understanding of the types of crimes that tourists suffer and thus generate more concrete solutions, The Voice of Guanacaste analyzed incidence reports from the Guiones Tourist Police.

The information studied covers the period from December 29th to May 3rd and includes reports from Puerto Carrillo, Samara, Barrigona, Buena Vista, Garza, Guiones, Pelada, Ostional and San Juanillo.

The data from other Guanacaste beaches was requested but was not received in time. However, thedirector of the Tourist Police for Guanacaste, Luis Sanchez Herrera, confirmed that the Guiones statistics partially reflect the reality of the other beaches.

According to the data, 50% of the crimes are vehicles break-ins, 25% are house burglaries, 22% are thefts and 3% by missing reports. However, both the chief of the Tourist Police in Guiones, Jason Vargas, and Luis Sanchez Herrera, director of the Guanacaste Tourist Police, commented that thefts are 20% more than the statistics show, but because they are usually belongings of little value, the tourists don’t file reports at the police stations.
