rtv0129QCOSTARICA – Starting today, January 2, changes in the vehicular inspection by Riteve, and requested by the Consejo de Seguridad Vial (Cosevi), apply.

The changes, published in La Gaceta (the official government newsletter) mid-November, but applicable starting in January 2015, are expected to increase inspection and rejections.

Some of the changes classified as “leve” which allows a pass are now “grave”, meaning a fail, include not having the new license plate if within the programmed changeover and the requirement of a quick battery disconnect for vehicles carrying hazardous material.

Other changes allow the use of tinted side windows as long as the interior is visible, but obstructing the line of sight rear view mirror, the window and the mirror itself, will be a “grave”.

Basically, if the vehicle is “good” mechanical condition should pass the vehicular inspection without serious problems. The change is expected to affect owners of vehicles that barely passed the inspection under the previous rules.

For any questions, Riteve will answer calls at the toll free line 800 788 0000.

Appointments for inspection can be made online at www.rtv.co.cr or by calling 905 788 0000.
