Starting April 1, CLARO will offer the 4G LTE internet access in four areas: La Uruca (San José), Heredia, Santa Ana and Escazú. The fast internet access with up to 10 Mbps will be available for smartphones and tablets and datacard for use in computer.
The cost of the service will be based on the speed selected starting at ¢8.500 colones monthly of the 1 Mbps up to ¢50.000 colones monthly for the full 10 Mbps.
For now, the plan is to offer only pre-paid service, with subscription services by the middle of the year.
Getting connected will require customers to already have a 3G plan and a smartphone or tablet with LTE capability, like the Nokia Lumia 625, 820, 920 or 1020 and an iPhone 5, 5S or 5C. Samsung and Huawei phones are in the process of being approved for use on the Claro 4G LTE network, that uses the 1800 MHz frequency.
Since last week Kölbi (ICE) has been offering 4G LTE to mobile users with coverage some 127 areas around the country. However, since the Kölbi service uses the 2700 MHz frequency, for now, the service is not available to the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C.
