GUATEMALA CITY – At least 11 people were killed and at least 12 were injured in violent crimes nationwide during a 12-hour period on Feb. 15, the National Civil Police (PNC) said.

On Feb. 15, two men were found executed in the Guatemala City suburb of Villa Nueva, while the body of a man with numerous bullet wounds was found on a highway between the nation’s capital and Escuintla.

Later that night, police found three men who had been fatally shot by gunmen at a liquor store in the city of Mixco. The killing could be extortion-related, police said. In Guatemala City, two men were found fatally shot by unknown killers.

Finally, at least 12 people, including three children, were injured and three others died when they were hit by crossfire during a gang gunfight in the northwest community of Cerro Gordo.

Guatemala is home to an average of 15 murders daily, one of the highest rates in Latin America.
