QCOSTARICA – Valentines Day will be remembered as a day of tragedy for the family and friends of  María Valeska Gonzalez Angulo, the 19 year-old woman murdered by her former lover  in the early hours Sunday morning, in the area known as Brasilia, in Santa Marta de Batan, in the province of Limon.

Investigators of the Organismo de Investigacion Judicial (OIJ) says a man, identified by his last names Medina Briceno, 22, shot the young woman in the head out a Limon bar. The incident occurred around 2:30am.

Witnesses say the Maria was celebrating Valentine’s Day with friends at the bar, when suddenly her former lover appeared. They argued, he left. Minutes later returning with the gun in hand.

Several witnesses told authorities after the initial confrontation, Maria decided to leave, when she was confronted outside the bar by Medina, first hitting her on the side of the head with the butt of the gun and then shot her. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene.

The man, who has no criminal record,  fled the scene but later, around 9:00am carrying the murder weapon surrendered to police.
