COSTA RICA NEWS – A mother was arrested on Wednesday, alleged to consenting to the rape her 11 year old daughter by her former live-in.
The Juzgado Penal de Alajuela (Alajuela Criminal Court) on Thursday remanded the former couple to three months preventive detention. The woman was identified by her last name, Gomez and the man, Camacho.
The sexual abuse of the young girl began in 2012, when Gomez and Camacho no longer lived together as a couple in barrio San José de Alajuela.
According to the Fiscalia (Prosecutor’s Office), the man visited his ex and had sex with the young girl in the presence and with the consent of the mother.
The abuse came to light when the minor told her story to a teacher.
Edwin Retana, deputy prosecutor for Alajuela, said “the young girl got to the point where it greatly affected her and decided to confide in her teacher”.
Retana explained that the man was arrested in Jacó, where he operated an air conditioning business.
According to Retana, the young girl, in her statement, said she was forced to watch pornographic videos of adults having sex with minors and then required to do what she had seen and was given a cell phone, on which she would receive obscene text messages, which her abuser would send her.
According to the information by the Fiscalia, although the couple no longer lived together, Camacho would give Gomez ¢110.000 colones monthly for rent, and each time he visited and had sex with the mother and the child, he handed Gomez ¢30.000 colones. The woman, according to authorities, is unemployed.
The young girl and her four year old sister are now under the protection of the Patronato Nacional de la Infancia (PANI), the child welfare agency.
