UPDATED: 1:10PM – The Ruta 32 is re-opened. The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi) informed that it was able to clear debris from the roadway and allow safe use of the road.

The morning closure that last for more than five hours resulted in traffic backing up for miles.

(QCOSTARICA) – A landslide in the area of kilometres 35 and 37 forced the closure of the Ruta 32  (the San José – Limón) Wednesday morning.

The closure is about 7 kilometres east of the Zurqui tunnel.

The closure was 8:30am and authorites are asking for patience, as the weather conditions through the area are hampering clean up work, keeping the road closed for an unspecified time.

Making the situation worse is the closure of the alternate, ruta 702, also due to a landslide.

At noon, traffic was backed for kilometres ahead of the tunnel, as drivers wait for the re-opening of the road.

This is a developing story.
