QCOSTARICA – Tourism Minister, Wilhelm von Breymann ruled the project of a new airport in the country, saying that the Juan Santamaria (San Jose) airport has sufficient capacity, saying the improvement and expansion of the Daniel Oduber airport in Liberia has more urgent need.
The minister made the statement to the media during the opening of the new operations support building at the San Jose airport.
For a new airport, a lot of studies have to be carried out, the wind studies take about three years, it is a long term project, according to von Breymann.
The minister said “… there is a real need is to improve Liberia’s airport, as we saw in the case of ash from Turrialba volcano, which caused the San Jose airport in Alajuela to be closed … we must take action to expand the Oduber in case of emergencies and in this way cover both arriving flights and departures.”
Von Breymann said the government recognizes the important of tourism, “tourists contribute US$2.6 billion a year in the country.”
Weeks ago, the Chambers of Tourism met with President Luis Guillermo Solis and requested a new airport, like the proposed new international airport in Atenas, to replace the San Jose, in 2026.
