Public Education Minister (ministra de Educación), Sonia Marta Mora, told legislators on Thursday that 13.655 teachers have salary payment problems, a number much higher than had been announced by the previous administration.

According to Mora, not all the teachers have received their full wages and some are still owed overtime and reimbursements.

The minister explained that they have been reviewing the cases, that includes data obtained from teachers with payroll problems.

According to the president of the Asociación Nacional de Educadores (ANDE) union, Gilberto Cascante, they have 6.000 reported cases of teachers who are owed their salary since the beginning of the school year in February.

The teachers are from some 300 public schools across the country, explained the ministry of Edcuation Human Resources Director, Yaxinia Díaz.

The problems with salary payments arose with the Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) adopting the Integra2 digital platform that excluded new teachers from the payroll.

Since May 5, teachers have taken to the streets in protest.
