Public buses must have a ramp to allow use for people with disabilities

(QCOSTARICA) Some 30 bus operators operating routes around the country may lose their concession because they violate Ley 7600, which calls for among the requirements, ramps for those with disabilities.

The Consejo de Transporte Público (CTP) – Public Transport Council, a division of the Ministerio de Obras Publicas y Transportes (MOPT), said Wednesday night that they have begun the process of cancelling concessions given the operators have not made the changes requested of them three months ago.

“For the time being the CTP cannot divulge the names of the operators as they have not yet been notified,” said MOPT minister Carlos Segnini, in confirming the CTP decision.

Segnini added that users should not be worried, as the process is quite lengthy and the companies must continue operating until their permits are cancelled.

Ley 7600 – the equal opportunities law for persons with disabilities – approved on May, 1996 and Regulation approved in March, 1998 – requires that every vehicle destined for public transportation must be made accessible for persons with disabilities, including those using wheelchairs
