COSTA RICA NEWS – A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook Costa Rica in the early hours of Thursday (August 7), at 2:50AM, the epicentre originating 11.8 kilometees of Sabanillas de Acosta, with a depth of 20.5 km, according to the Laboratorio de Ingeniería Sísmica de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR).

This is contrast to the report by the  Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (Ovsicori) de la Universidad Nacional, that places the epicentre of the quake 20 kilometres east of San Marcos de Tarrazú, and a magnitude of 4.8.

The Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN) says the epicentre was 13 km from San Carlos de Tarrazú and a magnitude of 4.6.

All three agree that the source was a local fault.

The tremor that lasted several seconds woke up many from their sleep.

The earthquake was felt strongest in San José, Heredida, Desamparados, Cartago, Curridabat, Escazú, Hatillo, Puriscal, Alajuela, Orotina, Jorco and Aserrí.
