Former Costa Rican president Oscar Arias, following his attendance of the Segovia conference where he blasted the United States for threats of military intervention in Syria and criticizing it for “pretending to be the world’s policeman“, he landed in Rome with his new wife Suzanne.
While in Rome, in between a stroll on the Il Trastevere, Don Oscar met with Pope Francisco, in Piazza San Pietro (St Peter’s Square). The 1987 Nobel Peace Prize winner describes the Pope as “a man Don Oscar describes as “a man who has sown promises of change and renewal of hope…”.
A day earlier, in my speech in Rome, Arias said:
“That’s why I applaud the courageous decision of Pope Francisco to speak out against a military invasion. Not only by the power of faith in this context, power of prayer and reflection, but also by the power of the complaint.
The Vatican, as my small country (Costa Rica), has no armies to threaten people. But moral authority has to demonstrate to leaders who are quick to wield weapons.
‘War marks the failure of the peace,’ said the Pope Francisco. How I hope that President Barack Obama understands that to the life station is not reached by the avenues of death “.
On his Facebook post, Arias says he took the opportunity of meeting Pope Francisco to ask him to pronounce in favour of the ratification of the Treaty on Arms Trade my government introduced at the Nations and that was recently approved.
He also asked his blessing for Costa Rica.
