QCOSTARICA – Fast food restaurants are being targeted by robbers, the proof of this is the number of robberies of fast food restaurants in the past five weeks: three.
The most recent was on Sunday when two men hit at gunpoint the Papa John’s in Pavas, making away with¢182,000 colones and a cellphone.
However, the robbers were arrested by the police when they crashed their getaway motorcycle into a utility pole in the area of the National Stadium.
Before that, on March 11, the Subway in Tibas was the target. In a similar fashion, two men enter the restaurant, at gunpoint hold up the place, getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash and at least five cellular phones. On March 6, three hooded men entered the McDonald’s in La Sabana, with guns they threatened employees and customers.
In all three incidents there were no injuries of persons, save for the Papa John’s in Pavas where one of the assailants had to be hospitalized for injuries suffered during the car crash.
Last year, the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) recorded a total of 134 assaults on all types of restaurants, an average of 11 per month.
So far this year, the OIJ reports 29 assaults on restaurants of all types, the majority in the provinces of San Jose and Alajuela.
