Although not directly involved in the 2014 presidential elections, the influence of former PUSC president Rafael Ángel Calderón can be felt, in the form of “Calderonistas” or supports of Calderón movement.
On Tuesday, another group of Calderonistas, the Convergencia Calderonista, said to have the closest ties to the former president, joined the Movimiento Libertario (ML).
Calderón, although not publicly active in the elections, says that some socialcristianos (members of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana party or PUSC) are support the Movimiento Liberatio party for “fears” of a possible José María Villalta (Frente Amplio party) win.
For his part, the PUSC candidate, Rodolfo Piza, shrugs off the non-support by Calderonistas. Piza said on Wednesday that within his party there militants of other parties working actively for his campaing.
Piza named former legistlator and former presidential candidate (1998) for the ML, Federico Malavassi and Rogelio Pardo, who served as Minister of Health and was a vice-presidential candidate for Guevara of the Movimiento Libertario.
Calderón insists that he is just a “spectator” in the electoral process.
