QCOSTARICA – Canadian David Best West, 43, has been convicted to eight years in prison for growing and trafficking in hydroponic marijuana. The 43 year-old foreigner was also convicted to 9 months for invasion of private property.

The Canadian was found guilty by the Tribunal Penal de Pérez Zeledón (Perez Zeledon Criminal Court), arrested in April 2013 after police detected the hydroponic growing on a farm in Chimirol Rivas, Perez Zeledon.

During the raid, agents confiscated more than 300 marijuana plants in pots, as well as equipment that apparently was used in the production. Seized was also ¢7 million colones and “important evidence” linked to the illegal activity.

In the 2013 police operation, the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) also arrested two Costa Ricans, a man and a woman, after a five month investigation following complaints by nieghbours.
