QCOSTARICA – Val Muscalu of Montreal was attacked by a crocodile at Costa Rica’s Tamarindo Beach. The attack occurred on his first day in Costa Rica, on March 6.
The croc bit his foot, knocking him off his board. Muscalu swam to shore and was taken to the hospital with foot injuries that required several stitches. He didn’t know what had hit him but later learned it was a crocodile.
“I couldn’t tell what it was,” Muscalu told The Tico Times. “But that thing was strong enough to pull me off my board. I thought it was a shark, but people on the beach saw a crocodile swim back into the river.”
The surfers helped Muscalu by using his rash guard as a tourniquet to stop the blood flow.
“There was damage up the tendon, but I thought it could be a lot worse,” Dr. Luis Diego Herrera, the doctor who treated Muscalu, told The Tico Times.
It’s rare for crocs to attack people. However, last year in a well-publicized event a man went for a drunken swim in the Tarcoles river and was eaten by a Crocodile.
