QCOSTARICA – The Hotel Grano de Oro by way of an email to the Q, says the 32 year-old Canadian who died the hotel Thursday afternoon was Danny Belanger.

In her email, Cristina Torres Sánchez, hotel administrator, said the hotel staff open the door to the room after Belanger had failed to check out (at 4:0opm) and was not answering phone calls or knocks to the door to his room. We found conscious, injured, and it was obvious he needed medical attention. Immediately we proceeded to call a private ambulance service; when they were attending him the medical team found three superficial stab wounds, apparently self-inflicted, and according to the criteria of the attending paramedics, the wounds were not serious.

“In the room were empty liquor bottles, various pills and a knife was also found, the scene looking like as suicide attempt.

“A few minutes later the man went into cardio respiratory arrest and despite the efforts of paramedics he died,” said Torres.

According to general manager, Marco Montoya, the hotel was able contact directly contact relatives with the assistance of the Canadian Embassy in San Jose.

Early reports Thursday afternon indicated that, the then undifentified man, had been attacked and died of the wounds inflicted on him.

The OIJ is investigating the case.
