The Constitutional Court or Sala IV, ordered the La Reforma and Gerardo Rodríguez Echverría prisons to eliminate critical overcrowding, control pest infestation and coordinate measures to solve the lack of beds.

Overcrowding is a serious problems in Costa Rica’s penitentiaries

La Reforma has been ordered by the court to solve the overcrowding within six months and eliminate the plagues within 30 days, while the Gerardo Rodríguez has six months to solve the overcrowding and lack of bedding.

One of the prisoners complained of having to sleep on a foam on the floor in a dormitory with 88 people when capacity is to be 60. Another prisoner told the court he sleeps on the floor with the cars, rats, and cockroaches.
