Correos de Costa Rica (the Post Office) says it will install 106 new Smart PO Boxes in various communities across the country during 2019.

The plan includes self-service kiosks in communities such as San Vito de Coto Brus, Turrialba, Ciudad Colón, Lindora and Coyol de Alajuela, Correos said in a press release.

The objective is to have 183 Apartados Postales Inteligentes (API) – Smart PO Boxes – across the country by the end of the year, up from the current 77.

Correos de Costa Rica enables Smart PO Boxes to permit the delivery of purchases over the Internet at a lower cost.

Smart PO Boxes allow customers who make purchases online, for example in the United States and China, using the Correos as the pick-up location.

“The self-service PO Boxes that currently operate are located at strategic points to which the customer has access in an extended schedule, with total comfort and security,” Correos de Costa Rica highlighted.

Once the package is deposited in the mailbox, the customer receives an SMS message and an email indicating a security code and the deadline to retrieve it. That number will be the key to open the assigned PO box.

The Smart PO Boxes service has a cost of ¢1,000 per package and can be paid online with a debit or credit card.

To expand its network of Smart PO Boxes, the post office has partnerships with convenience stores, bank branches, department stores and gasoline stations.
