QCOSTARICA – Costa Rica in 2080 will see green landscapes disappear. That is the effect climate change may have on Costa Rica, in particular in Guanacaste and the Northern Zone.
The images were recently presented by Alice Shackelford, representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) – Costa Rica, the United Nations’ global network advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge.
The UNDP estimates that by 2080, the amount of annual rainfall in Guanacaste will decrease by 65% compared to the current figure.
The national weather service, the National Meteorological Institute (IMN), considers that the images presented for the province of Guanacaste have a projected expected scenario, but in the case of San Carlos (Northern Zone), the situation would not be so severe.
Luis Fernando Alvarado, a researcher in the department of climatology at the IMN, explained that for Guanacaste we anticipate a severe drought, but, no such effect will be experienced elsewhere in the country.
“The situation in the overall of the country could not reach such an extreme,” he said
