No more free meals for Costa Rica’s legislators, announced Monday night the president of Legislature, Carlos Benavides.

The cutback, according to Benavides, will save the public purse some ¢25 million colones a year.

“The decision was made on Friday and the measure is in force from now on,” said Benavides, who indicated that the legislative have reacted differently to the measure, but it is something that has been talked about since long ago, since the tender for food in the cafeteria of the legislature was on a month-to-month basis.

He added that when the new Assembly building is finished, it will have a soda that will facilitate food for the legislators. He did not say if the soda (small restaurant) would be free or pay for the lawmakers.
