The construction of the new binational bridge over the Sixaola River, which is being jointly carried out by Costa Rica and Panama, presents a global advance of 56%.
At the same time, the relocation of the border posts of both countries in matters of migration, customs, police, and supervision of the transfer of vegetables and animals and the dismantling of the old railway bridge, was concluded.
To date, 28 of the 40 piles that will support the new 260 meters long and 16.4 meters wide bridge have been built. The new structure will be two lanes and have sidewalks and bicycle paths.
The work is scheduled to end in the first quarter of 2020.
This project is part of the Nor-Atlántico road corridor and is complemented by the extension of Route 32 between Río Frío and Puerto Limón (underway), the Bajo de Chilamate-Vuelta de Kooper highway (opened in 2017) and the Tablbillas border post with Nicaragua.
In addition, with the Tren Eléctrico Limonense de Carga (TELCA) – Limon Electric Freight Train, a project that will modernize the Valle La Estrella-Limón-Río Frío railway network and that will expand to Chilamate de Sarapiquí, the plan is to decongest route 32 and strongly boost the economy of the Atlantic region.
The completion of the Nor-Atlántico project seeks to facilitate the transfer of goods between the southern and northern borders without having to go through the Central Valley and better travel times.
