QCOSTARICA – Costa Rican neurologist Mauricio Chinchilla and Calixto Machado, of the Cuban Neurology and Neurosurgery Institute, travelled to Mexico to examine Aldo Gutierrez, who has been in a coma since he and several classmates were shot in Iguala, in September 2014.
Machado and Chinchilla traveled to Mexico at the request of the patient’s family and evaluated his condition and chances of recovery, the Executive Commission for Assisting Victims, or CEAV, said Tuesday in a statement.
“Once the analysis of the current information (clinical, neuroimages and neurophysiology) is completed, the doctors will prepare a diagnostic report on the vegetative state and guarded outlook in which Aldo finds himself,” the commission said.
The visit was made possible through the efforts of the group of experts from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
Gutierrez was shot in the head by police officers who attacked a group of Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School students on Sept. 26, 2014. Six people, including three education students, died that night, 25 were wounded and 43 students were detained by police and then handed over to members of the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel.
The bodies of the missing students have never been found despite extensive searches conducted by authorities and family.
The CEAV is a public agency created in January 2014 to assist the victims of federal crimes and human rights violations.
