QCOSTARICA – A 47 year-old man who lost his penis 20 years ago to cancer, on Thursday at the Costa Rica’s Hospital Mexico, underwent penis reconstructive surgery.
According to the information released by the medical centre, the procedure took more than 10 hours and was performed by reconstructive surgeons and urologists.
The man approached the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) – social security – hospital after learning of the first surgery of this kind in the country last year. Thursday’s surgery was performed by the same surgical team, led by doctors Carlos Centeno and Danilo Garzona.
Uses a microscopic technique to reconstruct the penis, in the procedure, taking skin grafts and tissue flaps from the forearm surgeons can roll it into something that looks like a penis, including a new urethra to allow the patient to pass urine. The reconstructed penis is then implanted in the area where the original member is located.
The experts said that the new member has no erectile function, however, as the patient progresses in the coming months he may be fitted with a prosthesis or device which allows the hardening of the penis, allowing him to resume sexual activity.
According to the medical report, the patient is progressing satisfactorily.
The man, recently appearing on local television channel 7 program “7 Dias”, (identity protected) spoke of the importance of such procedures, especially for the quality of life and mental, emotional and sexual health.
“I hope many who are going through what I am also have a chance to be normal men. I imagine many have gone or are going through this problem (penectomy). I would like they go (to the hospital) and have the surgery,” said .
In September 2015, Costa Rican doctors performed a surgery of this type, that of a 35 year-old Quepos man who suffered an accident while peeling coconuts. The knife he was using touched a power line, burning his lower body, resulting in the amputation of both of his legs and a good part of his penis.
