The Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN:UCR-ICE) – National Seismic Network – is warning not to take seriously an unknown source message has circulating on the social networks stating that there will be a high-magnitude earthquake in Costa Rica in the next few days.
“We must clarify that this message has no foundation,” said the RSN and reiterates that earthquakes cannot be predicted with certainty, that is, you cannot know the exact date and time or the place of the occurrence of the next earthquake.
“Costa Rica is located in a subduction area and close to the limit between four tectonic plates. Seismic activity in Costa Rica is and will remain high and that is notorious on any seismic map. The population of the country has experienced many earthquakes throughout history and this is why we must always be prepared to face them, regardless of unfounded rumors about a possible date of occurrence,” the RSN said.
It is important that the population be clear that entities with capacity to provide reliable information to the public about the seismic and volcanic activity of Costa Rica are: The Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE), as coordinator of the National Risk Management System; the Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN:UCR-ICE); and the OVSICORI-UNA.
The Verified Technical-scientific information shared by these entities has the purpose of protecting the safety and integrity of citizenship and alert it before any seismic or volcanic event.
