QCOSTARICA | The water and sewer utility, the Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA), says some 131,000 in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) of San Jose will face water shortages at the height of the dry season.
Another 360,000 will be affected with some form of shortages.
Sergio Núñez, deputy manager of the AyA, says areas such as Alajuelita, Coronado and Desamparados will be the communities most affected by the shortages.
Higher elevations like Puriscal (San Jose), Atenas (Alajuela), Cañas and Tamarindo (Guanacaste), currently in the “red”, will see water shortages of up to 8 hours daily.
Nuñez said they have yet to define a rationing program, that will include new piping systems and awareness campaigns, working with the tourism sector, mainly in Guanacaste, to encourage lower water use.
