QCOSTARICA – Although passing on the right, in particular the shoulder, is prohibited, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. In fact, the shoulder is used by many, mostly motorcyclists, as a passing lane.
That may all come to an end soon.
The head of the Policia de Transito (Traffic Police), Mario Calderon, said his officials will be getting tough with motorists to avoid serious traffic accidents.
The fine is ¢52.000 colones (US$97).
“Definitely these kind of people abuse conditions and we (traffic police) have to take note to detect these actions and process to issue the corresponding fine,” said Calderon.
According to the Traffic Police chief, this includes vehicles who travel with half of the vehicle within the lane and the other half on the shoulder.
“This is not only breaking the law, but causes traffic congestion and serious accidents,” said the police chief.
Calderon reminds drivers that the shoulders (where they exist) is for vehicles with mechanical problems, used in emergency situations and even used at times by pedestrians.
