(QCOSTARICA) It was shortly before 3:30am when former legislator and evangelist, Justo Orozco, was released after his arrest Tuesday afternoon for alleged sexual abuse and confinement of a woman who met up with for a job interview.

Despite a request by the prosecution for preventive detention (jail), Orozco was released on the condition of not leaving the country, sign in at the courthouse and not go near the victim.

The story is that the 65 year-old Orozco was arrested around 5:00pm Tuesday, when a 29 year-old woman, from Naranjo and hose identify is being withheld for her privacy, ran to the Pavas, San Jose, police station, to report that Orozco had taken her, without her consent, to a nearby motel and allegedly touched her private parts and had attempted to rape her when she refused his advances.

The woman told police that Orozco drove into a motel located a few hundred metres from the police station, they sat in the parking lot, when he sexually abused her and was then able to escape while he was closing the garage door (to the motel room)*.

The police report says that Orozco was detained in his car as he went looking for the woman.

Since the man was caught red-handed, so to speak, it was originally believed that he would be submitted to the Flagrancy Court, a process that could resolve the sexual abuse case in less than two weeks.  But, that was not the case, it will now go to a full trial court, after Orozco’s lawyer requested a psych evaluation of the victim.

Entering the courthouse Tuesday, Orozco said it had all been a misunderstanding and that he was being set up. “I am innocent (…),” Orozco said.

Orozco has been involved in a number of controversies in the past.

* Motels in Costa Rica are typically the drive-in style, where a garage door is open to indicate the room is available, the vehicle pulls in and the garage door is closed.
