Every Canadian knows that “the Mounties* always get their man”. But yesterday, for four Canadians in Costa Rica, it wasn’t the long arm of the Red Coats rather that Costa Rica’s judicial police known as the OIJ.
In a quick action by agents of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), four Canadian men identified by their last names Shane, Trevin, Landed and Robinson, where taken into custody for credit card fraud.
According to the OIJ, the four men entered Costa Rica days earlier (September 7) and proceeded to withdraw funds from different ATM’s in San José using “cloned” debit cards from Canadian banks.
The men were surprised by the OIJ, when at 1:30pm they were stopped in their vehicle in La Sabana norte, in the area of the Instituto Costarricense de Energía (ICE) offices and found to have on them 225 fake cards,US$20.000 in cash and electronic equipment to clone cards.
The OIJ said it was working with bank investigators and Interpol, following the men for several days. The withdrawls where made in Escazú, Santa Ana, Tibás and San José.
*The Mounties are the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and they have a reputation for catching criminals they are after.
