COSTA RICA NEWS – Sage Million, wanted in the United States and captured by Panamanian authorities last week, had made a number of trips to and from Costa Rica over the last two years. In fact, he was crossing into Panama from Costa Rica when captured.
Katia Rodriguez, Costa Rica’s immigration director, confirmed that Million had entered and left Costa Rica nine times, between August 5, 2012 and January 16, 2014.
Most of the “entradas” and “salidas” from Costa Rica were terrestrial, at Paso Canoas and Sabalito, at the Panama border This year, however, immigration records indicate that the fugitive entered Costa Rica at the Juan Santamaría (San José) international airport on January 15 and left, by way of the same airport, on January 16.
Director Rodriguez had no comment on how the wanted man could mock (burlar in Spanish) Costa Rica’s immigration.
The director would only say that there was no Interpol warrant for his arrest. The director also said that the immigration service is investigating an “significant” number of Americans who have “suspect” migratory behaviour.
The director’s comments are in reference to many who, every three months, leave Costa Rica for Nicaragua or Panama, then return to Costa Rica, avoiding providing a criminal record which would be required if they were to apply for residency status.
Million was captured by Panama’s Servicio Nacional de Fronteras de Panamá (Senafront) when he tried to cross into their territory, in the mountainous area of Renacimiento, in the province of Chiriquí.
According to the police report, the American fugitive was hiding in the bush, in Costa Rican territory, when he was spotted by Panamanian officials trying to cross the border.
In Hawaii, Million is man wanted for an outstanding bench warrant and for questioning in connection with a recently reported sexual assault of a minor.
