Q COSTA RICA The intense rains of Friday afternoon appears to have caused a short-circuit that shut down the runway lights, causing the complete closure of the Juan Santamaria International – San Jose – airport operations.
The closure was confirmed by Ennio Cubillo, director of Aviacion Civil (Civil Aviation).
“The airport concessionaire, Aeris, are doing their best to recover the lights and locate the fault. At the moment it (the airport) will remain closed until 10:30pm. The most important thing now is security. Flights have been diverted to Liberia (Guanacaste) and Panama (Panama City),” said Cubillo early Friday evening.
Reports, however, indicate that the airport remained closed well past midnight Friday.
A check of the airport website this morning has flights arriving and departing with normality.
