The ‘rainy’ season has just gotten underway, a few weeks earlier than usual, and it’s been already a wet one. How wet has it been?

According to the experts at the national weather institute, the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional Costa Rica (IMN), already fallen this month of May is 60 to 80 percent of what is typical throughout the month.

Metereologist Warner Stoltz explains that this is because the ambient temperature is 2 degrees (Celsius) above the normal, causing heavy downpours and severe thunderstorms in the afternoon.

A typical rainy season day in Costa Rica is hot and sunny mornings that turn to rain – from scattered to downpours, depending on the area – to cool nights.

Another change seen this month is rain in the late evening and even through the night.

The season of “don’t leave home without an umbrella” is upon us.

And, if the last week is any indication, best to get a hold of rubber rain boots or galoshes (also known as dickersons, gumshoes, or overshoes). You will need them.
