The Minister of Labor, Steven Núñez Rímola, resigned on Friday night, hours after a traffic accident in which a transito (traffic officer) who escorted him to Guápiles, Limón died.
Núñez, announced his resignation Friday night, posting on his Facebook profile a letter addressed to president Carlos Alvarado.
“Today, Friday, due to extremely unfortunate circumstances, when I was heading to the province of Limón to attend an activity, the transit officer Juan Carlos Mora died while working so that I could arrive on time for the event,” wrote Núñez.
“This unfortunate fact, which I regret, forces me to take a step aside from the government that you lead so that my situation does not affect the political plan that the Alvarado Quesada administration has drawn up,” said the 34-year-old now-former minister.
The accident occurred at 10:12 am Friday, about two kilometers before the bridge over the Rio Sucio, authorities confirmed.
Juan Carlos Mora Ulate (56), had been with the Policia de Transito for 19 years and currently served as director of the Zurquí Corridor.
Mora lived in Aserri and was the father of three children.
Preliminary information indicated that the last report by Mora was that he was on the side of the road in surveillance work when the minister’s entourage passed, who had asked him for help to evade the traffic congestion due to the paving work being carried out on the road.

Apparently, the officer skidded on his motorcycle, loses control of the vehicle and crashes. He died at the scene from the impact.
