It was back on April 20, 2012 when the mayor of Coronado, Leonardo Herrera Sánchez, was handcuffed and taken into custody by judicial agents, for embezzlement.
On Friday last the Tribunal Penal de Hacienda acquitted Herrera of the charges.
The mayor was apprehended coming out the Motel Cascada Azul, in San Francisco de Dos Ríos – motel row in the east side of San José – using the official municipal vehicle.
The judge, in rendering his decision, said the mayor could use the “company car” at his discretion, for example, going to a motel.
However, the court decision does not sit well with the prosecution, and is expected to file an appeal against the acquittal.
