The expansion and the resurfacing of the 50 kilometres of the Interamericana Norte between Cañas and Liberia can be a hazard for drivers until the construction work is complete in May.

The Ministerio de Obras Publicas y Transporte (MOPT)is advising drivers to use precaution, given the start of the holiday season, a time where many in Costa Rica head to the beaches of Guancaste for a family holiday while schools are closed.

MOPT officials also say they will be stepping police controls along the section of highway that is being expanded from two to four lanes, that includes the overhaul and reconstruction eight bridges.

The presence of heavy machiney an workers on the road will be common and drivers should slow down, obey the posted speed limits and directions of traffic controllers.

The staff of the Dirección General de Tránsito will also present along the stretch of highway, handing out flyers to rivers with basic recommendatons to prevent accidents and bad driving.
