A woman who worked as a nanny will be spending the next 20 years of her life in prison because instead of caring for and protecting a 12-year-old girl, she took advantage of the moments alone to abuse her.

The woman, identified by her last name Baltodano, 49 years of age, on Tuesday afternoon was condemned by a Tribunal Penal de Nicoya (Nicoya Criminal Court) as guilty of the crimes of rape and sexual abuse.

The events for which Baltodano was convicted date back to March 2010, in Barrio San Martín de Nicoya, when she was working as the young girl’s nanny.

According to the investigation of the Fiscalia (Prosecutor’s Office) and the evidence provided at trial, instead of taking care of the little girl, Baltodano took advantage of the proximity and loneliness of the house to be able to abuse her.

The girl’s mother, who worked full time, realized what had happened when her daughter built up the courage to tell her what the nanny had done to her.

After learning of the terrible situation, the mother filed a criminal complaint in July of that year, when the child and her mother moved, which gave the victim more security to tell what happened.

The authorities confirmed that Baltodano will spend the next six months in preventive detention, while the sentence is final.
