QCOSTARICA – The ultimate solution to the collapsed portion of the Interamericana Sur (Ruta 2) is expected to cost ¢1 billion colones, according to calculations by the National Roads Authority (Consejo Nacional de Vialidad – CONAVI).
CONAVI director, Mauricio Salom, admitted Friday that the repair is expensive due to ground conditions.
Salom said that Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (Ministry of Public Works and Transportation – MOPT) engineers are evaluating two possible options, however, he did not go into detail.
As to time frame, the director said that it cannot be determined until a final solution is decided on.
A 100 meter section of road of the Ruta 2, in the area known as La Cangreja, north of Perez Zeledon, collapsed on January 29.
Until the weekeend before last, when a temporary repair permitted the temporary re-opening of the road, all traffic between San José and Southern Zone had been re-routed onto secondary roads and the Costanera, the Pacific coastal road.
