It’s that time of year again, approaching is the annual ‘romeria’ (pilgrimage) to Cartago, on Friday, August 2.
To that end, the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) will start their controls today, Saturday, July 20th and continue on Thursday, July 25th, a holiday (Annexation of Guanacaste) and then from July 28th to August 2nd.

The controls will focus on the Ruta 251, Curridabat to Tres Rios and the Ruta 2, the Florencio del Castillo (San Jose to Cartago) and the main roads leading to and from the Basilica de Los Angeles.
In addition, the permitter of the Basilica will be closed off to all vehicular traffic.
