(QCOSTARICA) – As a preventive measure, the Ruta 32 was again closed last night (Friday), from 10:00pm to 6:00am this morning (Saturday), from the toll station in Heredia to the crossing at Rio Frio de Sarapiqui.
Mario Caldero, head of the Policia de Transito (traffic police) explained that in the past year they have been applying the protocol of closing the road during adverse climatic conditions, such as last night, and checking the road in the early morning, before any re-opening.
This week two landslides through the Zurqui closed the Ruta 32 for several days, and for two days (Monday and Tuesday) at the Rio Blanco bridge at kilometre 58.
From San Jose to Guapiles, the Ruta 32 weaves through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, a mountainous area in the middle of one Costa Rica’s rain forests, greatly affected during the rainy seasons (May to November).
Calderon said closures can occur at any moment.
At the Q we provide you with a link to the Policia de Transito website for updated road conditions. We recommend checking it before heading out to anywhere outside the Central Valley, in particular areas east of San Jose.
