(TICO BULL) In case you were wondering who won the Gold Cup (Copa de Oro), duh, who else? Mexico, beating Jamaica 3-1.
The Mexicans won this one fair and square, winning their seventh CONCACAF Gold Cup title with no penalty kick needed this time.
Not that Mexico isn’t deserving of the title, but, Costa Rica or Panama could now be celebrating this victory if it hadn’t been for some clear, questionable referee calls, calls that many believe was due to corruption inside the CONCACAF, wanting to see Mexico and the US, drawing the maximum profits out of the games.
Who wants to watch the Ticos (Costa Rica) or the Canaleros (Panama) in the final?
The controversial calls (in the quarter final between Mexico and Costa Rica and the semi-final with Panama) enabled the CONCACAF to cash in big, having both Mexico (first place play) and the US (third place). A win-win for the CONCACAF.
In Mexico, the press celebrated the win with irony.
“Not everything that glitters is gold”, said the front page of the Récord, but acknowledging that the game against Jamaica was the “best game” of the series.
“Mexico had to erase the bad image of the semifinal against Panama with a convincing result with Jamaica in the final,” said the newspaper.
The Universal wrote, “so you know” the national team can win without the refereeing controversy.
