Q24N – Spanish is the mother tongue of 470 million people and the third most-used language on the Internet, second only to English and Chinese, according to Internetworldstats.com.
Of the estimated 3.366,260,056 internet users as at November 30, 2015, 256,787,878 were Spanish speaking internet users by language.
According to Cervantes Institute (Instituto Cervantes), a worldwide non-profit organization created by the Spanish government in 1991, confirms the numbers for 2015, with 7.9% of all Internet users communicate in Spanish.
Cervantes says Spanish take the same position on the two main social networks, Facebook and Twitter, both with huge potential for growth in their use.
The Instituto Cervantes, responsible for promoting and teaching of Spanish and spreading of Ibero-American culture, said that Spanish was the second most-used language on Twitter in predominantly English-speaking cities like London or New York.
Cervants says 6.7% of the world’s population is already Spanish-speaking.
The forecasts estimate that in 2030 the Spanish speakers will be 7.5% of the world’s population and that within three or four generations, 10% will speak Spanish.
