Everyone knows Alexa, the website provides commercial web traffic data, visited by over 8.8 million people monthly.
Alexa ranks sites based primarily on tracking a sample set of internet traffic — users of its toolbar for the Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome web browsers. Alexa measures how ‘popular’ a site is, mainly based on the number of page impressions (page views). So having a high position (low number) on Alexa’s ranking roughly corresponds to having many visitors — which is always a good thing.
For this post I took a look at what sites are “tops” in Costa Rica according to Alexa, looking at the top 100 sites in Costa Rica based on Alexa’s “Traffic Rank in Country” a rough estimate of this site’s popularity in a specific country.
The rank by country is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors to this site and pageviews on this site from users from that country over the past month. The site with the highest combination of visitors and pageviews is ranked #1 in that country.
No surprise that Google, Facebook and YouTube head the list of 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Notable is CRHoy.com ranking number 5, way ahead of La Nacion (10), Diario Extra (23), self touted as Costa Rica’s most sold newspaper, and other news websites.
What is surprising, or maybe not, is the Tico lust for sex.
Five porn websites make the top 100 sites in Costa Rica: Taringa is 33, xHamster is 44, RedTube is 54, Pornhub is 85 and Youporn is 100. Six, if you include Manhunt (81), which is not a porn site in itself, but does offer gay dating, chat and hookups (sex in other words).
