QCOSTARICA – They weren’t there looking for a job, they were there to protest a company looking to hire people looking for a job.
On Thursday, a group of five angry taxi drivers paid their entry to the Expoempleo at the Antigua Aduana (Old Customs) house, to protest face-to-face against Uber employees and their recruitment stand at the job fair.
Among the taxi drivers was Virginia Moreira, who last month chained herself to a tree outside the house of President Luis Guillermo Solis, again protesting against Uber, alleging corruption in allowing Uber to continue operating.
There was shouting and insults. Some job fair goes were very vocal, “people should have the right to choose” they screamed angrily at the protestors.
Finally, police had to be called in to “calm tensions”.
On its Facebook page, Expoempleo organizers called on the public to decide if the Uber stand stays or it should go. Yajaira Change, spokesperson for the even said, “those attending the fair should decide.”
The job fair continues today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday).
The taxi drivers have vowed, starting at 8:00AM this morning, Friday, to amass in protest outside the Antigua Aduana, with taxi drivers and their vehicles coming from many parts of the country.
