A study by the Club de Investigación Tecnológica (CIT) and Ernst & Young reports that telecommuting (remote work or telework) grew only 3% over the last five years in Costa Rica, standing now at 35%. In 2008, an Acham report indicated that the penetration of telecommuting was 32%.
The research is based on the responses of 70 workers and 14 employes in the private and public sector in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) of San José.
According to the survey data, 70% of private sector workers telecommuted, in contrast to only 33% of public employees who worked from home.
The research indicates that of the 324 public institutions, only 9 have a telecommuting plan in place, and 17 are in the process of developing a plan.
