Producers and exporters in Costa Rica are showing concern on the rise of local and international drug seizures, mainly of shipments of cocaine in fruit, ornamental plants and flowers from Costa Rica.

“The scourge of drug trafficking has planted itself in the agro-export sector. We it with seizures in Costa Rica and abroad”, said an exporter of pineapple, who for security reasons, spoke to CRHoy.com in anonymity.

The most recent police action was Thursday by when the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) raided a series of homes and businesses, detained a group hiding cocaine in shipments of flowers to Europe.

Earlier this month, Spains Guardia Civil (national police) seized 2.5 tons of cocaine hidden in a shipment of pineapples from Costa Rica. The drugs was distributed among 2.296 packages. Six Spanish national were arrested on that size of the pond.

Spain, Germany, England, Holland and Austria are some of the countries with the highest number of seizures of drugs conceaed in Costa Rican agricultural exports, according to the OIJ press office.
