(QCOSTARICA) Making headlines in the Spanish language press this past week is the detention of José Daniel Gil Trejos, a Costa Rican national, being in a Nicaragua prison, under deplorable conditions with little food, clothing, medical attention and legal counsel.
At first it had been believed that the Nicaraguans were holding the Costa Rican for some type of political retaliation, given the poor diplomatic relations between the two countries.
However, in reality the detention by is based on an international warranted issued by Interpol back in 2013, wanted in Mexico for an alleged case of commercial fraud.
The press office of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), confirmed they had known about the international warrant against, but, could not arrest the man on home soil. However, the OIJ is entitled to notify other countries when he leaves Costa Rica, as it occurred on May 26.
according to the OIJ, when the Tico set foot in Nicaragua, authorities in that country were prepared for the arrest.
Trejos is currently being held in the El Chipote prison, in Managua, Nicaragua, a detention centre that was once used for torture and described by Costa Rica’s Foreign Minister, Manuel Gonzalez, as a dungeon and being held with barely enough food, inadequate clothing, access to lawyers, and confined in a dark cell without ventilation, and in isolation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has filed a complaint with their Nicaraguan counterpart.
Trejos also happens also to be the husband of the Costa Rica’s former deputy minister of Security (Seguridad y Gobernación), Marcela Chacon, who says that there is a “flagrant, systematic and continuous” violation of human rights” of her husband by Nicaraguan authorities.
Trejos had lived in Mexico for the some 30 years, working there as a business manager.
