QCOSTARICA – The exodus of vacationers of the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) of San José, headed for the Pacific and Caribbean coasts and the mountain resorts is expected to increase starting Saturday, December 27, estimates the Policia de Transito (traffic police).
That is the reason for the increased patrols, spot checks and radar controls with focus on speeding and drinking and driving on the major routes out of the Central Valley.
According to Hedemer Fallas, cheif of operations for the Policia de Transito, controls will include the Ruta 27 (San José – Caldera); Ruta 32 (San José – Limón); Rutas 1 & 2 – the Interamericana Norte to Nicarauga and Sur to Panama; and the Costanera Sur that runs along the Pacific coastline from Pozón (Orotina) and Paso Canoas (Panama border).
Fallas added that controls will also take place on GAM routes like the Circunvalación (San José ringroad); the autopistas Florencio del Castillo (San José – Cartago), General Cañas (San José – Alajuela), Bernardo Soto (Alajuela – San Ramón), Paso del Aguacate between Puntarenas and Orotina, and the Cerro de la Muerte (Cartago – Perez Zeledon); and downtown areas of San José, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago.
To facilitate traffic flow for vacationers, Fallas explained that heavy trucks will be probihited on the General Cañas, Bernando Soto, Florencio del Castillo, Braulio Carrillo and the Radial to Heredia, between 2:00pm and 9:00pm on December 28 and January 3 and 4. The fine for breaching the restriction is ¢49.000 colones.
