The ash fall from the latest eruption of the Turrialba volcano once again affected airport operations at the Juan Santamaria (San Jose international), forcing the airport to shut down for three hours.

Silvia Chaves, spokesperson fort airport manager, Aeris Holding Costa Rica, said the airport shut down at 3:30am affecting a total of 14 flights: 10 outgoing and 4 incoming.

Guillermo Alvarado, volcanologist at the Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN), explained the colossus had a “minor” eruption starting at 2:00pm Sunday, lasting about 45 minutes and keeping with the pattern the volcano has displayed recently.

At the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (Ovsicori), volcanologist Floribeth Vega, said four more eruptions on Sunday at 8:07pm for 40 minutes, at 10:09pm for 37 minutes  and this morning (Monday) at 12:33am and another at 4:02am, both lasting about 27 minutes each.

Ash fall has been reported in many areas of the Central Valley, especially in Coronado, Rancho Redondo in Guadalupe, Heredia, San Jose, Santa Ana and Rio Segundo in Alajuela (the area around the airport).
