The owner of a grocery store in Hatillo, San Jose, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the murder of a man who stole two beers from his store.

The incident occurred in April 2012, when Junye Ge Yang, used his pistol to chase and shoot the thief in the stomach. Kevin Monge Monge, 29, died at the scene.

Ge Yang, 36, is originally from China, but is a naturalized Costa Rican.

The sentence was handed down by the Tribunal Penal de Hatillo.
