QCOSTARICA – The next time you get pulled over by traffic official the likelihood of getting your car hauled off by a “grua” (tow truck) is unlikely. Not because you may not deserve it, but, the Transito (traffic official) has to make a judgement call, to comply with his duty or heed to a call by his union.
The Unión Nacional de Técnicos y Profesionales de Tránsito (national union of traffic officers) is warning Transitos that insurance will not cover damages to vehicles resulting from a tow.
The call comes after a Transito in Guanacaste had an incident (no details were given) and it was not covered by insurance.
If the Transitos heed to the call of their union, it would tie the hand of the Policia de Transito (traffic police body).
In Costa Rica, the Policia de Transito operates two trucks, manned by Transitos, to remove vehicles from circulation of public roads.
But, Transitos can opt for confiscating license plates instead of towing.
The union is calling of the police body for insurance to cover towing mishaps or damage to vehicles in transit while being towed.
The Policia de Transito has yet to comment.
